“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called Children of God” Matthew 5:9

The word “blessed” in this passage means much more than “happy,” because happiness is a fleeting emotion contingent on outward stimuli. Rather the word “blessed” as it is used here, refers to a distinctive joy that comes about from a sense of well-being knowing that one is saved unto eternal life. Accordingly, those who promote peace are blessed, and carry the privileged title of being called, “Children of God.”

It goes without saying that we need more peacemakers today. Yet, the problem is that everyone wants peace on their own terms, and very often this is not the peace that Children of God should be promoting because it is based on human agendas and perspectives.

And so, the “Prince of Peace,” Jesus Christ, intervenes and states clearly that true peace can only be found in Him, in His words, in His commands, in His agenda for humanity. We’ve heard the quote, “Let there be peace and let it begin with me.” (Jill Jackson Miller). It’s sentiment is well intentioned, but more accurately we should say, “O Lord, let there be peace and let it begin with You…worked out through me.” For true peace can only be found in God and initiated by Him.

It is true that when we have peace with God, we can then have peace within ourselves, and only then can we have peace with one another. This is a peace that surpasses all human understanding. It is a true peace we can then share as the Spirit empowers us. God grant us such peace for the sake of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace!

Know that you are loved!

Peace and Joy!
