“Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion blot my transgressions.” Psalm 51:1
While the Book of Psalms is full of prayers to God on a variety of topics, perhaps no other prayer in Scripture is as powerful on the topic of repentance and renewal than that of Psalm 51. As you may remember, this was the Psalm King David wrote after the prophet Nathan came to him about his sin of adultery with Bathsheba.
In this Psalm, David not only asks for God’s mercy, love and compassion, but that through forgiveness, God would create in him a pure heart and renew a steadfast spirit within him. We know that God did indeed forgive David and that He also continued to prosper him as well. David’s heart was truly contrite and repentant. This was God’s doing so that the Law would have its way and cause David to seek the forgiveness that only the Gospel can provide.
We can be certain that when we are repentant over sin, that this is because God has confronted us with His perfect Law and because we have His Spirit within us, we desire forgiveness and the fruits of the Gospel. This then brings us the assurance that God has indeed forgiven us and renewed us by His grace to go forward and live for Him.
When you heart weighs you down because of sin, remember David, remember this Psalm, and most especially, remember the merciful, loving and compassionate God that has called you to true life in His Name. And then, like David, pray the prayer of repentance and know that you are forgiven.
Know that you are loved!
Peace and Joy,
Pastor Kilian
