“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36
The freedom John is speaking of is a freedom that comes from knowing the truth. In this section of Scripture, the Jewish leaders have been denying that Jesus is the promised Messiah and more so, that He is God. He compares their unbelief to that of slavery that keeps them bound by sin. So it is for any who deny the truth, they are bound to falsehood and accordingly a slavery that denies forgiveness in the Name of Jesus.
We live in an age of unbelief. Many deny Jesus’ claims and forfeit the free gift of salvation that He brings. Accordingly, they remain in slavery to sin even though they are unaware of it. Only the truth of Jesus’ divinity and His work on the cross can set people free. This is our calling as Christians, to tell people the truth of life in Jesus Name and to set them free from the bondage of death.
The promise that the verse above gives is that we are free from sin, death and the power of the devil, all because by faith, the Spirit has given us the truth of where real life is to be found. While this world continues to try to deceive us, God’s Word rescues us from such lies and plants our hearts in a truth that grants freedom. We live in this truth and it gives us hope and promise each and every day!
Know that you are loved!
Peace and Joy,
Pastor Kilian
