“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3
A major part of Jesus’ earthly ministry, along with His teaching, was that of healing. He calls Himself The Great Physician and brought healing to the lame, the blind, the mute, the diseased, ill and demon-possessed. What a wonderful experience that must have been for those in need to receive immediate healing. They came to Jesus hurting and went away well. How encouraging it must have been to all who witnessed His miracles of healing to see others receive their health again.
While such healings were truly wonderful, we can rightly assume that they were only temporary. No doubt each would experience other health issues in their lives as they grew older, and of course, ultimately death would come to each of them. The greater miracle was the healing that faith in Jesus brought about. When witnesses saw His miracles, they were encouraged in the faith to recognize Jesus not only as the promised Messiah, but God Himself. The real healing that Jesus provided, was the healing of the soul that came as one put their trust in Him as their personal Lord and Savior.
While the physical healings were only temporary and finally death would rule, the healing Jesus provided was eternal and conquered the power of death. The true healing He brought about was spiritual, bringing healing to the soul through the forgiveness of sin. This is the true healing that each of us receive everyday as we confess our sins and know that our great God applies the salve of absolution, binding up our wounds and healing our broken heart. In Christ’s healing, we can move forth with hearts and souls that are healthy and well and truly alive!
Know that you are loved!
