“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23

The writer of the Book (perhaps Jeremiah) is lamenting over the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. and weeps over the future of God’s people. And yet, there is still great hope! The verses above capture the promise that God has not abandoned His people despite the difficult times they are facing. When the writer feels hopeless, he calls to mind this promise and it gives him encouragement.

Having gone through a difficult year in 2020, this passage from Scripture builds us up to confidently face all that 2021 holds for us. Our hope is built on the love, compassion, and faithfulness of God! These are gifts that do not fade away with the passing of a year or a day, but rather, “…are new every morning…” and remind us that today is a new day, even as we come into this new year.

No matter what hardships we face, we can wake each morning knowing that the Lord’s promises are greater and that we will not be consumed by the challenges of life. We may lament what sin has done to this world, but our God is faithful, and He will see us through it all! Because of this truth, we can be confident in the hope this new year brings! Have a happy and blessed New Year!

Know that you are loved!
