“Sing with joy to God, all the earth!” Psalm 66:1

What are your most beloved hymns that you like to sing? I imagine a number of tunes and lyrics come forth, many which you know by heart. Hymns can be Bible verses put to melodies, or they may be an artist’s own words on Biblical truths that are combined with music. We always find them to be uplifting, not only because of the beautiful notes that accompany them, but most especially because of the meaningful lyrics they proclaim. Many a Christian has been moved to put heartfelt lyrics to song just as King David did, and as long as they espouse spiritual truths, they are good and helpful.

I have often found myself praying the words of hymns or songs and using their melodies as an impetus to offering prayers and petitions to God. In recent Daily Devotionals, I have spoken about using the Books of Psalms and Proverbs as prayerbooks for daily use. Today, I am encouraging you to use the hymnal or praise songs that are dear to your heart to do the same. There is a wonderful collection of prayers readily available to offer to God in song and when we do so, we are always uplifted.

I would encourage that when you sing a hymn or praise song, to do so as an act of prayer. Think on the lyrics and petition God to apply them to your life. Sing a familiar song or look up and learn a new one. You will certainly be blessed in doing so! Try it with the hymn below and pray all the verses.

“Lord Jesus think on me, nor let me go a-stray: Through darkness and perplexity point out Your chosen way!” (v.4) LSB #610 (v.4)

Know that you are loved!

Peace and Joy!
