“He is… the Firstborn over all Creation” Colossians 1:15
While the statement may not seem in line with our current eternal theme of Jesus’ essence, it clearly argues for the supremacy of Christ. There was never a time when Jesus was not, however, “in the fullness of time,” our God sent Jesus His Son to be born and enter into all of creation in a powerful way. Theologians term this as “begotten” and affirm Jesus eternity even as we recognize His coming into the Creation through the plan of salvation. (Please read on your own Colossians 1:15-20 which explains this truth in detail.)
To know that Christ is “First born” gives Him precedence over all. It is a title that reminds us that we should give Jesus precedence over all things in this life. St. Augustine wrote, “Christ is not Lord at all unless He is Lord of all.” While some people don’t recognize Jesus in their lives, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we recognize that He is our life and our being and our all in all!
