“I AM the Bread of Life!” John 6:35
We continue to reflect on Jesus’ “I AM” statement begun last week as we examine His words today proclaiming Himself to be “The Bread of Life!”
I love bread! Don’t you? It is so satisfying to eat in all of its various forms and it always enhances a meal. Perhaps this is why the term is used interchangeably for not for just food in general, but for all of life’s needs. When we petition our God in The Lord’s Prayer to “give us this day our daily bread,” the request encompasses not only food to sustain the body, but all physical, emotional and social necessities like shelter, clothing, labor, a good reputation and the like.
When Jesus calls Himself the “Bread of Life” He makes the point that He is that which is most necessary to true life, even beyond our physical, emotional and social needs. Jesus feeds us spiritual and greats true life. This truth becomes even more powerful when we receive Holy Communion and take in the bread His true body, and are given the sustenance for real life through the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of faith.
Jesus is the only One Who can satisfy our deepest needs and desires, and He does so in plenty as we inwardly digest his Holy Word, the Bread of Life!
Know that you are loved!
Peace and Joy!
