Every last Monday in May is set aside as Memorial Day, a National Holiday in which our country honors the men and woman who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. Military. It is a good day to “fly the flag” and thank God for His providence over our great land. Many will use it to gather together and celebrate the unofficial start of Summer and all the freedoms we enjoy because of the self-sacrifice of others.

On this day it is also appropriate to reflect on the self-sacrifice of our Lord, who shed His blood so that all people could live in freedom from our greatest enemies of sin, death and the power of the devil. It is our faith in Him and the virtues of the Christian Faith that have made our country strong and prosperous.

Normally on this day, people would customarily visit a military cemetery and pay their respects. Others would participate at a parade or another event and honor our great giver, God Who sustains all the blessings we enjoy.

When we think on those battlefields and hills of strife where our freedoms were won, let us also recall that battlefield, the Hill of Calvary, where our Commander and Chief won the greatest war for the sake of true freedom.

And perhaps we will recall the classic hymn by George Bennard:

“On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

The emblem of suffering and shame; And I Love that old Cross

where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain.

So I’ll cherish the old Rugged Cross, till my trophies at last I lay down.

I will cling to the old Rugged Cross and exchange it some day for a crown.”

Be blessed and know that you are loved!

Peace and Joy,

Pastor Kilian
